We’ve had such a great allotment year – the weather was great for so many of the crops. We are still enjoying a few strawberries, raspberries and blackberries from late varieties.
Mostly now though we had cleared the plot to dig it over and ‘put it to bed’ for the winter.
Next to the allotment entrance people leave any excess crops to share with others – this week I picked up some apples, tomatoes and medlar (which I’ve never seen before). I’ll leave the medlar to ‘blet’ then apparently they make great jelly.
We took advantage of the warm and dry weather to drive over to a friend’s farm and collect some well-rotted horse manure – kindly offered for free. We filled at least 35 sacks using a shovel, transported them in the back of the car (which took 2 journeys) and wheel-barrelled them to our plot – a good work out! it looks a lot but it won’t go far! We’ll add it to all the fruit, the asparagus and then to where we’ll plant the hungrier veg next year.
