Three quarter of a million children in the UK – 7 % of the population live with food allergies and intolerances.
Symptoms of food allergies and intolerances can include:
- headaches
- rashes
- itching
- diarrhoea
- constipation
- gut pain
- acid reflux and heartpain
- irritability and mood swings
- breathing problems and swelling of throat
- eczema
- asthma
- IBS
Dietitians are key professionals in not only the management but also the diagnosis of allergies and intolerances.
Laboratory and medical tests for allergies are notoriously unreliable, so the recommended method for diagnosing allergies and intolerances are firstly eliminating one or more suspected foods from your diet followed by reintroducing them. This is best done under the supervision of a dietitian, and if you have ever had a severe reaction to a food, reintroduction should only be done under medical supervision, on hospital or clinic premises.
I have a solid background in working with consultants in allergy clinics, and as per NICE guidelines, make sure I keep up to date with current guidelines, evidence and products.
If you have a serious allergy I strongly recommend seeking referral to specialist services via the NHS. If you suspect you have a food intolerance, contact me to make an appointment to start a trial elimination and reintroduction programme.
